LOCATION

The course is held at the conference centre attached to Penrith Panthers in outer Western Sydney. Buses will transfer participants to and from Sydney Airport (Sydney participants should make their own way to Panthers). Details of the timing of bus transfers will be provided in the information sent to participants. Accommodation is in the Mercure Hotel attached to Penrith Panthers.

ATTENDEES

The course is designed for second year Business Services trainees (school leavers) or first year Business Services graduates. However, this is not exclusive. If you have staff you would like to send but are unsure of their suitability, you are encouraged to talk to one of the Faculty members.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The aim of this course is to develop the skills of attendees to be able to take additional responsibility for the complete preparation of a client’s financial statements.

The course also teaches or reinforces a number of technical skills, including working paper preparation, account reconciliations, basic letter writing, lease accounting, and accounting for Fringe Benefits Tax and Capital Gains Tax.

COURSE OUTLINE & STRUCTURE

The major focus of the course is a case study involving the preparation of interim (9 months) and annual accounts for a theoretical client (Unit Trust with Corporate Trustee). Each candidate is responsible for the completion of their own case study work, although there is substantial interaction with members of the Training Faculty, as well as opportunities for attendees to discuss issues amongst themselves in a workshop situation.

The case study is based on information provided by the client (with varying degrees of accuracy) from which attendees are asked to prepare a set of accounts for presentation to their manager and the client.

The course includes 1-hour lectures on Working Papers and Budgeting, Income Tax and its various components, Lease Accounting, and ‘Value Added Services’, as well as group workshops on each topic, and breakout sessions for people who might be struggling with a particular concept.

The course encourages attendees to ‘think for themselves’, and includes a tutorial session involving the analysis of the accounts and recommendations to clients for change or improvement. The format also ensures that assistance is provided to anyone who might be finding an area particularly complicated.

PRELIMINARY READING/TRAINING

Candidates would benefit from a working knowledge of:

  • Working paper preparation and cross-referencing
  • MYOB (although this is not critical). Hands-on training on MYOB is provided.
It is important to note that an appropriate referencing and cross-referencing structure is provided, but attendees who are familiar with their own firm’s system are encouraged to make use of it.
DRESS

Dress is casual.
